What is ISIC, and why do students need it in Slovakia?

Published · 16.04.2026

What is ISIC?

ISIC, the International Student Identity Card, verifies student status in more than 130 countries. It is recognised by educational institutions, transport operators, museums, shops and other organisations, providing access to discounts and opportunities in Slovakia and abroad.

Why is it useful in Slovakia?

ISIC often serves as the main university student card. It allows students to use discounted transport, confirm their status, access libraries, residences and canteens, and receive student discounts.

Benefits

Discounts cover trains, buses and urban transport; cafés and restaurants; cinema, museums and events; clothing and electronics; and travel. Online offers are also available for services, learning platforms and software.

Myths

“ISIC is unnecessary”: without it, accessing many Slovak student benefits is harder.

“It is useless plastic”: discounts can save hundreds of euros each year.

“It is only for university”: the card also works for transport, shopping and travel.

“It only works in one country”: it is an international document recognised in many countries.

ISIC supports comfortable student life by saving money, simplifying access to services and opening opportunities in education and everyday life.
