Published · 02.10.2025

Slovak universities use the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, ECTS, supporting flexible study planning and recognition of qualifications between EU countries.

One credit represents 25–30 hours of learning, including lectures, practical classes and independent work. The source specifies a minimum of forty credits per academic year for progression, 180 for a bachelor’s degree and 120 for a master’s.

Study plans contain compulsory courses, povinný, for everyone in a subject; compulsory electives, povinne voliteľný, from which students choose a required number; and free electives, voliteľný, including courses from other faculties or universities.
