How much does student life in Slovakia cost?
Published · 18.01.2017

This topic is relevant to those planning to apply to Slovak universities and those still choosing where to study. We focus on three main costs: tuition, often free; residence or flat rental; and urban transport.
Tuition: EUR 0–11,000 per year
Study at Slovak public universities is free when teaching is in Slovak. Many foreign-language programmes are also available; the original article provides examples of their fees in euros per academic year.
Accommodation: EUR 30–730 per month
Residence prices vary considerably between cities and individual buildings. The original article included illustrated examples; these files are no longer available at their old addresses.
Transport: EUR 9–14 per month
The original table shows student urban transport prices in several Slovak cities, in euros.
You may have heard about free state trains for students and pensioners. According to Slovak Railways information cited at the time of the original article, this benefit applied to EU citizens and citizens of other countries with permanent residence in an EU country. Other students could receive discounts of up to 50–70%.
