A participant’s experience
ESL at Fanshawe College, Canada
Translated testimonial. Names, dates and circumstances are retained from the original.

In this article, I will tell you about my experience on the ESL programme. I will try to explain its advantages and disadvantages and share the positive experience I had over those two months. Although ESL finished a while ago and I have been taking my main programme since September, I wanted to share information that might help you if you decide Fanshawe College is what you are looking for.
First, what is the ESL(EAP) programme? It is preparation for international students, helping them improve English grammar, reading, writing, listening and speaking. When I joined in the summer, it was called ESL. In September, management changed the course and renamed it EAP. There was not much that was new: five levels became ten. Perhaps that is more convenient. Students disagree: some like the new system, while others see little difference. In my opinion, the main aim—improving English—has not changed.
While still in Kyiv, I booked six months of ESL. On arrival, I took a placement test. To my surprise, I did quite well, which is why I spent only two months on the programme. After completing the course and passing the exams, I planned to take the final, fifth level, but the ESL coordinator sent my exam results to the committee, and I was admitted to the main programme. Honestly, I was not ready for that turn of events: I had expected to begin in January 2017. Thanks to Halyna, a consultant in the international office who helps Russian-speaking students with questions, I was encouraged to start in September.
Looking back, ESL was a wonderful time full of positive moments. From the first days to the end, I never regretted choosing Fanshawe College. It helped me make many friends who supported me as I settled in. There were around 18 students in my group, all friendly and cheerful. It was interesting to work together on projects and assignments. I must also mention the wonderful ESL teachers. There were four, each teaching a different subject. Thank you for guiding us and teaching us so much in a short time. My favourite was Paul, who taught Speaking and Listening. His classes were always fun; his positive energy created a welcoming classroom atmosphere. He certainly deserves a Teacher of the Year award.
To finish, here are the advantages and disadvantages of ESL(EAP) as I saw them.
Advantages: The programme improves English and teamwork while also developing each student's individual qualities. Qualified teachers help and advise even outside class. The teaching materials suit each level. They include not only textbooks but also fiction assigned by the reading teacher. There are equipped classrooms for presentations, many computer rooms and places to do homework. The huge three-storey library is used by all college students. A positive, supportive atmosphere gives you energy to work more productively.
There is only one disadvantage: the time flew by too quickly. But it was fun!
Sending everyone good wishes!
